How to become a lawyer

A lawyer is a professional expert of the law who represents people or entities in legal issues. To become a lawyer involves a lengthy education process usually consisting of law school after obtaining a four-year degree.

The law school is probably the most important element because that's where the "training" and all the techical aspects will be garnered; therfore, it is highly importnat that the law school you attend is the best it possibly can be, given your qualifications and financial circumstance.

If you become a lawyer you have the potential to make good earnings plus you put yourself in a position to help people.

Although a law school is the final step in the process to becoming a lawyer, it helps to follow some advice in determining if you would like to become a lawyer.

Ask yourself if you really want to help people. That is a very important point to determine if you want to become a lawyer. A lawyer is an advocate. Advocates speak for people they represent just as if they were that person. That is the mentality one must have in order to become a lawyer.

Fundamental requirements to become a lawyer

Prior to a law school, you will need to get a degree in law. Part of being a lawyer is the great deal of research work that goes into every case being dealt with, and this will provide the neccessary theoritical knowledge.

If it's a non-law course, it is required to take a conversion course that usually lasts a year thus providing the necessary academic exemptions to go on to the next phase.

Once you have done your degree, you will need to go to a law school.

Choosing a law school

Choose a good law school. This is self-explanatory. Part of being successful after you become a lawyer is the quality of your education.

Prior to attending a law school, you will need to attain high marks in the law school admission test (LSAT).

  • A law school that's accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). This would provide you with highly recognised law education. However, ABA accredited laws schools tend to charge fees that are substantially greater than non-accredited law schools.
  • If you do your education at a non-accredited school, you will then need to pass you will need to an examination prior to starting your course.

Law school rankings

There are published rankings of law schools that rate the schools using various criteria. Your college/university should keep a publication these rankings. Of course, you can also access law school rankings online.

Make sure you have the resources available to support yourself while going to law school after earning your undergraduate degree. Since you still probably will not be working, make sure you have the financial resources available for you to get through law school and become a lawyer.

Strong personality

One of the key requirements to become a lawyer is the ability to defend an argument? To become a lawyer means that you will have to get the facts relevant to your side of a case and stick to your argument for your client's sake. If you are the type who presents an argument and then backs down in the face of opposition then you should not become a lawyer.

Get advice from others to help yourself determine if you should become a lawyer. Many times others see characteristics in us that we don't see. It could be that someone would offer constructive criticism to you that would actually be helpful in analyzing whether or not you should become a lawyer.

See law in action

Visit public trials and hearings to help you determine if you want to become a lawyer. Many trials and court cases are open to the public. Sitting in on them could be a wealth of information to see if you would like to become a lawyer as a profession. Its not all about rigerous study at a law school that makes a great lawyer!

Television and movies do not give you the correct information to determine if you want to become a lawyer. Enough said on this one. If you base your life's decisions on television and movies then please do not become a lawyer.

Weigh the choices you have in what specialization you like to become a lawyer in. There are lawyers in family law, criminal law, immigration law, tax law, etc. Some companies hire lawyers on their staff full time to represent the company on compliance issues.

Lawyer earnings

As for earnings, some types of lawyers have far greater earnings than others. A corporate lawyer, especially if he/she represents one of the top or mid-sized publicly quoted companies can demand huge yearly salaries. They also usually get share options in the company, which sometimes is a lot more than their salary.

A criminal lawyer on the other hand would usually work for the state. Their earnings are usually far lower than corporate lawyers, unless of course they are involved in high profile cases representing wealthy clients.

There are other avenues you can explore in order to determine if and how to be become a lawyer. Remember, the most important quality you must identify within yourself is if you can represent another person or entity in the face of opposition.
