How to find the right paralegal course

To become a paralegal a person is required to have some educational qualifications, often in paralegal courses.

Unfortunately, with the growth of online study, there is now an abundance of online educational programs, often aimed at adults looking for a career change or getting qualifications to make themselves more employable in the job market.

Growth of online paralegal courses

It is no different in the legal industry; there has been a huge growth in online paralegal courses. Many of them make promises such as finding instant work as a legal assistant once the course is successfully completed.

It is critical for anyone wishing to become a paralegal to do the right course. Doing the wrong course will be waste of money through fees, but also a waste of time doing a course that is not looked on favourably by any potential employer.

Here are some tips on finding the right paralegal course.

  • Make sure any course that you embark on is fully accredited; further, it is approved by the American Bar Association. This will give the course some viability as a proven paralegal course.
  • The American Bar Association has a list of paralegal courses that is approved by them.
  • Make sure the course is a member of the American Association for Paralegal Education. These programs have high degree of recognition from employers because the courses approved by this body are professional courses that are fully approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). The American Association of Paralegal Education has a database of approved paralegal programs. You can search through their database using various criteria. Here is a link to the database .
  • Any paralegal course provided by a university will almost certainly be accredited, it will also likely to hold a lot of weight with potential employers.
  • You can find information on approved paralegal courses at your local college/university.

Online paralegal course

Unfortunately, a large number of online paralegal courses are as yet not approved by the ABA, especially the ones provided by standalone online education providers. However, traditional universities that provide online education are more likely to have accredited paralegal courses.

Success rate of courses

A paralegal qualification can be attained through various routes; they may be through a degree program, a masters program, paralegal certification, etc. There is no doubt that the success rate of these various courses will vary in terms of the number graduating and then finding work; the starting salary of those graduating; the size of firms that are hiring them, etc.

If possible, try to research which courses are best in terms of some of those criteria.

Of course financial constraints may be a factor in your decision when choosing a paralegal course. Fess for courses vary depending on the type of course, the institution providing the course.
