How to decide whether to invest in solar power stocks

There has been a lot of recent press attention on the viability of solar power as an alternative means of energy in the light of worries expressed over global warming caused excessive use of the existing energy source like oil. This has been cue for companies to develop products o make use of solar power and become less reliant on non-renewable sources like oil.

This article will discuss whether investing in stocks or funds with a focus on solar power or renewable energy will make a good investment, one that provides great returns over a long period of time.

A great way to maximise returns from investing in the stockmarket is to get in early and invest in stocks or funds when the companies or investments are still in their infancy. Well, companies or any investments in solar power fit that category because it is only recently that the sector has been receiving a lot of attention. Early investors could make astronomical returns on their investment, should they get in early and in the right stocks/funds.

In order to determine whether this industry has the potential to turn fledgling companies into multibillion-dollar entities

Follow the money - One good indicator of the success of a sector is if a lot of venture capital money is poured into it. There is no doubt that solar power and companies dealing with this field in general are attracting big money from some of the biggest venture capital firms.

Political pressure in finding alternative energy source - There is no doubt there is unbelievable amount of political pressure to find an alternative means of energy. Firstly, there are the concerns about global warming; secondly, The US government is keen on finding other forms of energy so they become less reliant on oil from the Middle East and other countries that are at times hostile to the US, leading to great volatility in price of oil and putting pressure on the US economy.

Investment by big companies in solar projects – A good way to tell whether it has potential is to see if large, well-established companies are investing big money, particularly companies in sectors that provide energy such as oil and gas. This would indicate that these companies are looking to the future and they are apprehensive that they may lose revenue to firms providing alternative energy source in the future.

Increased flow of funds to the sector – Are investment funds focussed on solar power stocks or companies with a significant interest in utilizing solar power as a renewable source of energy attracting money? If the size of funds increases in size quickly then it's a sign that investors see a lot of potential.

Lot of media attention on solar as a viable renewable source of energy – A lot of media attention creates interest and gets the attention of potential investors.

Initial success of solar projects – If there is initial success with smaller ventures utilizing solar power in some capacity then this will give the whole industry big boost and lead to bigger projects and, perhaps, eventually growing into a fully fledged industry.
