How to avoid getting hayfever

Hayfever is very common, affecting many people in the summer months. It tends to be familiar and occurs alongside asthma or eczema. It occurs where individuals are sensitive to particular substances, hence known as irritants or allergens and cold like symptoms are produced in response. Spring and summer hayfever is likely to be caused by allergy to flowers, grass or tree pollens or fungus spores.

Avoiding Hayfever

  • Additives and " junk foods " will raise the sensitivity of the immune system and so must be avoided.

  • Vitamins are essential to the proper functioning of the immune system and hence a balanced diet is important to the hayfever sufferer. Vitamin A and Vitamin C are vital for Hayfever sufferer.

  • Eat yogurt or any soured products three times a week.

  • Consume no cakes, chocolate, coffee, dairy products (except yogurt), packaged or canned foods, pies, soft drinks, sugar, tobacco, white flour products, or any junk food.

  • When allergy season arrives, spend as little time as possible outdoors. Keep windows closed during the day, and use your car air conditioner when you drive. Especially avoid going outside in the afternoon. If you exercise or play sports outside, do it in the morning rather than in the afternoon.

  • Shower and change your clothes when you come indoors after spending time outside. Pollen can stick to your hair, especially on a windy day. Washing your hair helps to keep the pollen from getting into your eyes.

  • Keep pets either inside or outside. Dogs and cats can pick up pollen on their fur and bring it indoors with them.

  • Avoid going to parks and fields during the daytime because there is a lot of grass, plants and trees.

  • Injection of steroids : This can lead to vulnerability to ordinary colds.

  • Antihistamines : These can be bought over the counter in tablet form. They act by suppressing the release of histamine.

  • Be extra diligent. Indoor allergens could increase your sensitivity to outdoor allergens.

  • Rinse your eyes. To soothe stinging red eyes, wash them out. Get an over-the-counter eyewash solution and just wash the eye out over a sink. That will get some of the allergen out of the eye. Do it at least a couple of times a day.

  • Cut the a.m. workout. between 5:00 and 8:00 a.m., when plants release pollen, so try to exercise later in the day.

  • The best and safest way to control allergies is the natural way-avoiding allergens and taking steps to normalize immune function and prevent or lessen the symptoms. Allergies can usually be controlled if you are willing to make changes in your lifestyle, diet, and mental state.

Reduce exposure to causes of hayfever

Symptoms of grass pollen hayfever can be reduced to some extent by avoiding or reducing your exposure to pollens:

  • Check the pollen count (local newspaper, radio, TV etc) - stay indoors when it is high
  • Avoid being outdoors in the early evening when pollen counts peak
  • Sleep with windows closed
  • Keep car windows and doors closed (some cars are fitted with pollen filters)
  • Ask someone else to mow the lawn
  • Wear sunglasses to stop pollen entering the eyes

Several of these self-help measures can also be applied if you suffer from hayfever due to tree pollens or mould spores. It makes sense to minimize exposure to the cause of your problem.
