How to detect symptoms of detached retina

This guide helps you understand what is meant by a detached retina, symptoms of detached retina and an insight into the treatment for the problem.

What is Retinal Detachment?

A retinal detachment is the condition when the retina in the human eye moves away from the normal position into the back of the eye. A human eye views objects just like how a camera takes pictures of objects. When you look at an object, the retina acts like a lens in the camera and takes a picture of the object.

Thus when the retina is moved away from its normal position, the vision of the eye is affected, sometimes leading to blindness. So, it is considered to be a dangerous illness and an early diagnosis and treatment may cure the disease.

How to identify a Retinal Detachment?

A person affected by a detached retina or torn retina may suffer from jarred vision or a feeling that they watch through a tinted glass. The aforementioned symptoms of detached retina need not necessarily lead to retinal detachment while it is advised to visit a doctor as soon as possible because these may lead to retinal detachment.

Early identification of the disease is always easier to rectify. Once identified, the doctor may advise you to undergo a surgery for the detached retina.

Available treatments for a Retinal Detachment:

Retinal detachments can be treated through surgery. The type of surgery required for a person may differ and is usually decided by the doctor. Usually a gas bubble is pushed into the space between the retina and the back wall of the eye. The gas bubble pushes the retina into its normal position. This process is called Pneumatic retinopexy.

Once the detached retina surgery is complete, there usually is some discomfort for the person. The doctors may advise necessary medications after surgery. Return of vision may take awhile and usually may take up to a few months.

In some cases, there is a possibility for the vision being the same. But that is the risk one has to take when undergoing surgery. E treated retinal detachment has maximum probability for complete return of vision.
