How to get rid of fruit flies

Fruit flies can be a very annoying creature to have flying around your home, restaurant, or office. These tiny little flying bugs can be found any place where cooked or raw food is sitting around rotting and fermenting. This means if you purchased a bag of potatoes and put in under the counter where they was one rotting potato in the bag that you did not notice, you will more than likely have these fruit flies hovering around your kitchen. Fruit flies even love items such as soda cans or any type of can that has had food inside.

The best way to avoid these pesky creatures is to throw out foods as soon as they begin to rot, put away cooked food immediately, and remember to keep all foods in airtight containers.

You can clean all day long with all kinds of chemicals and still have a few fruit flies invading your home, however, there are a few tips that will help you rid your home of these annoying creatures that love to fly around the head of your guests.

In order to rid your home of fruit flies do the following:

  1. Clean all empty cans such as soda or beer with soap and water.
  2. If you do not want to clean the cans, place them in air tight bags
  3. You can create your own flytrap. Fruit flies love sweet things such as red wine, soda, banana, or other sweet fruit. Place a small amount of one of these items in a dish. Cover the dish with plastic wrap holding it in place with a rubber band. Using a needle put small tiny holes in the plastic wrap. The fruit flies will be drawn to the sweet odor and find their way inside the tiny holes you created with the needle, but they will not be able to find their way out.
  4. Another home remedy that always works is using ½ pint of whole milk, 1/8 pound of raw sugar, and 1 ounce of ground pepper. Cook these ingredients in a small saucepan for around 8 minutes. Place the liquid in a dish and wait. The flies will dive in and not come out.
  5. You can also kill fruit flies with this home remedy. Use 1/8 cup of vinegar preferably white and just a drop of dawn dishwashing liquid. Begin pouring water into the bowl, the fruit flies will come quickly and be trapped and die.
  6. Regular household flytraps will also work, but will certainly not look good hanging around the house.
