Varicose veins are swollen or bulging veins under the skin, usually occurring in the legs. For most people this is only a cosmetic problem, as serious medical complications neither result from it nor are expected in the future. However, serious cases of varicose can lead to bleeding and skin problems such as an eczema like condition can result.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose is simply caused by a culmination of too much blood gathering due to the closing of valves within the veins. The blood is not able to flow properly as a result.

Symptoms of varicose veins

The symptoms of varicose veins are that you will notice the signs of varicose veins. The veins will be bulging. In severe cases, it can look distressing. In very minor cases, it is not much more than how the veins would look on the bicep on a bodybuilder stripped off fat i.e. it is merely a cosmetic issue.

Other symptoms include discoloration of the area affected by varicose veins, swelling of the area, itching on and around the area.

Surgery

This is done to remove the Saphenous veins, the largest vein in the legs. It involves making incisions at the ankle and in the groin. A wire is then entered into the vein through the ankle incision and passed through until it comes out the incision through the groin. By passing the wire through the vein will be stripped out.

Disadvantage of sclerotherapy

The disadvantages of sclerotherapy are that its results are not always very permanent. Sometimes, the varicose veins reappear after several weeks.

Laser treatment

One of the most effective treatments for varicose veins is laser treatment. Unlike a surgery to remove varicose veins, a varicose laser treatment is not nearly as invasive. It does not require penetrating the varicose veins through a cut at the skin.

Varicose vein laser treatment requires a tube (like a needle) to be inserted through a small opening through the skin where the varicose vein is. A laser is used to beam a light through the tube to penetrate the varicose veins, the heat from the laser closes the vein.

Varicose veins can open up and bleed. A condition the doctors term thrombophlebitis.
