How to quit smoking
You have been smoking for many years. One day, you wake up, and cannot stop the hacking cough. Yet you light up again. Your wife tells you that it is time to quit smoking. Quit smoking? How? You depend on this habit every day. Quitting smoking will probably be one of the greatest challenges in your life. But quitting is actually simple in methodology but hard in commitment. Here are some quit smoking tips:
- You can use aids such as nicotine patches. These are helpful to get you over the nicotine cravings you will experience. However, keep in mind that there will be a point when you have to remove your dependency on the patches. The patches can be quite expensive but nowhere near as expensive as cigarettes.
- Frequent places where you cannot smoke to help you during the time you are trying to quit. One suggestion is to ride the bus instead of driving because you cannot smoke on the bus.
- Let people close to you know that you are quitting. This is helpful in that when you get irritable (and you will), they will be able to understand your situation.
- If during your endeavor to quit smoking you have a setback and light up, don't worry about it. Just start to quit all over again. Many people who have successfully quit had to start and restart many times.
- Chew gum while you are quitting. Avoid gum that contains sugar as this could add to the inevitable weight gain.
- Begin a regular exercise program once you start your quitting program. Most people gain weight when they quit smoking so the exercise program can help to offset the weight gain. Don't get discouraged as you begin to gain some weight because this is normal. Gaining a few extra pounds is not as unhealthy as continuing to smoke
The biggest key to this is getting a support group. Those you care about who will be supportive of your journey in quitting smoking and not critical of it. Information is a key element to reaching your goal of being smoke free.
