Imagine yourself waking up early in the morning to prepare for a new day. You cook breakfast for your husband and kids, and after that, you try to prepare for work as well. Your family counts on you to wake them up after a good night’s sleep. Suddenly, you go inside your child’s room to let him greet a new day when suddenly, you are welcomed by a rather horrendous sight.
There is your child, sleeping like an angel, on top of a wet, soggy blanket.
Your child has wet the bed again.
A lot of kids and even teenagers around the globe tend to wet their beds every night. Medical doctors call bedwetting as enuresis. Experts say that this is very common in a lot of children everywhere. Contrary to what others had been saying, bedwetting is not caused by drinking too many fluids before bedtime.
Causes for bedwetting range from genetic factors (that is, bedwetting probably runs in the family), infections in the urinary tract, and spinal cord abnormalities. These are just some of the reasons why your child wets his bed every night. However, you should not just simply judge solely on these factors. You may want to consult your doctor once your child’s bedwetting becomes quite habitual.
However, if the doctor insists that your child’s bedwetting can simply be cured by taking precautionary actions which can be done to your child so as to avoid the habit, here are some easy behavioral therapies for you to follow to gradually ensure a good night’s sleep:
Children want rewards for a job well done. Tell your child that you will reward him whenever he would not be wetting the bed. This certainly works whenever your child receives a reward whenever he accomplishes well in school. Surely, it would also probably work in this case.
It is very important for you to let your child change the sheets himself whenever he wets the bed. Children are naturally not inclined to do tasks, and the grueling task of changing the bed sheets will surely reinforce the idea that wetting the bed is not a pretty sight.
You may train your children to practice holding their urine in longer. This may need a help of a doctor, since they have more effective behavioral training programs regarding this matter.
Some families put up a system which alarms whenever a child wets the bed. This may be quite expensive, but effective. The alarm would wake your child up, causing his sleep to be interrupted. When done every night, this would gradually cause a behavior change in your child.
These are just some of the easy ways on how to train your child to stop bedwetting. This issue, no matter how trivial it may sound, may cause guilt and embarrassment to the child. Never punish your child when he wets the bed. Instead, try to work on ways on how to solve the problem and not to make it worse.
