| How to tell Prempro side effects
This guide discusses the side effects of Prempro and litigation against the company behind it, Wyeth, for the possible health risks that it causes.
Prempro is a medication prescribed to women to treat postmenopausal symptoms. It is a hormone replacement therapy. However, Prempro has been linked to many side effects. Some of these side effects are such that many women that have been using Prempro for years are filing lawsuits because they have allegedly developed a major illness from using it. Prempro is given to women to treat symptoms such as vaginal itchiness, hot flashes, sweating and general discomfort associated with menopause.
Major Prempro side effects
Here is a list of the side effects Prempro has been known to cause. These side effects have been substantiated by studies carried out to determine the safety of Prempro.
Breast cancer : A study by National Institute of Health, found women were 24% more likely to get breast cancer when an estrogen and progestin were combined like in the case of Prempro than would be the case without using it all. However, one should not panic because the risk is still very low overall.
Ovarian cancer : Some women using estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) are at risk of developing ovarian cancer. However, studies for now show it affects only those using estrogen only therapy. The prostegin, whcih is also found in Prempro, is supposed to counteract risk of ovarian cancer.
Strokes : The same study found there was a 41% increase in the likelihood of having a stroke compared to subjects in the placebo group.
Blood clots : There was a 100% greater chance than those in the placebo group of getting a blood clot
Less serious side effects
Other side effects of Prempro, though not nearly as serious, include the possibility of gaining weight, leg cramps, tiredness, fatigue and dizziness, swelling of some parts of the body e.g. hands.
Pempro lawsuits
If there is in anyway that you feel you are suffering or there may be signs of one of the major complications mentioned above such as breast cancer, blood clot, a stroke, you should seek medical advice from your doctor. If there is a chance that the cause of any of these is related to Prempro use, you should seek the advice from an attorney/lawyer dealing with Prempro litigation.
Up to 6000 women that have used Prempro have filed lawsuits out of a total user base of 6 million. The lawsuits have been filed for various side effects that are possibly caused by Prempro, as mentioned above. In most cases, the Prempro lawsuits have been filed by women who have allegedly developed breast cancer from Prempro.
Of course, it will be down to the lawyer to argue the case that Prempro was the cause of the health problems. One indication that strongly supports the possible side effects is that, the organization behind the study to determine the safety of Prempro, decided to stop testing because of the risks were too great to justify continuing the study.
