How to tell signs of depression

Depression is one of the most debilitating mental illnesses pervading people of all ages, races and genders. It transcends cultures and causes severe non-productivity and adverse effects to one's mental health. Often, people neglect the symptoms of depression and brush it off as part of a normal person's life. The symptom of depression is usually classified as such only because it is consistently prevailing on one's life.

Depression can also be deadly if it goes untreated and is allowed to progress to a very serious state, so detecting its signs early is extremely important.

But how can one really tell if he is suffering from depression which is clinical in nature or simply experiencing a mere emotional setback which can pass over time? Clinical depression could be treated in the right manner only if one knows the degree and extent of his or her case of depression. Treatment comes only on a case to case basis and what may apply for one person may not exactly be as effective for another.

  • Explore the kinds of depression and see if any of it closely fits your condition

Clinical depression has many kinds such as postpartum depression and anxiety depression, among many others. Postpartum depression often occurs after pregnancy and it is something pregnant women must often look out for. This is to be expected since a pregnant woman has a lot of adjustments to make in her body. Even a woman who is not inclined to be depressed can have postpartum depression after pregnancy.

  • Check for anxiety attacks

Recent studies have also shown that anxiety and depression actually go together. All people who are diagnosed with depression also have high levels of anxiety in them. People with clinical depression are often oppressed with anxiety disorders. This double disorder can hardly be avoided because depression is one mental illness that is highly related to other psychological disorders.

  • Brush up on your family history

A family history of depression, substance addiction or personal family problems can increase one's risk for these various forms of depression, but this does not necessarily mean that a person with a negative family history is instantly a depression candidate. Preventive measures can be made, as well as lifestyle changes that can help minimize, if not eliminate, bouts of depression.

  • Check for the consistency of symptoms, physical or otherwise over a period of time

A typical depression sign is a persistent feeling of sadness and discontent over his or her situation. Another is a lack of sleep. There are also accompanying physical symptoms for clinical depression. These symptoms are normal to any person if it does not happen on a prolonged basis. But if it happens for long periods of time from two weeks to a month, psychiatric help is already required.

Once these symptoms are experienced, there must be instant preventive measures to help nip the problem in the bud as soon as possible. Depression when left untreated spirals into more complex mental disorders which are more difficult to treat. There are a lot of offered solutions for depression, and some medication may be required for severe cases. However, in its mildest form, a good psychiatrist and ample support from other people such as family or friends is often an effective way to minimize bouts of depression.
