How to treat anorexia
One percent of the population suffers from anorexia symptoms and yet many of these people do not even realize that they are suffering from anorexia. However, this condition is truly recognizable amongst the female teen population. Yet anorexia occurs in people of all races, even though white females are those who are most often affected. Here is what needs to be done in the way of anorexia treatment:
Parents should do their best to make sure that a problem with anorexia bulimia does not occur in the first place. This can be done by providing their teenager eats healthy meals on a regular basis.
If there is thought to be a problem, the patient needs to see a doctor in order for this condition do be diagnosed.
At no time should a parent be accused of causing this illness.
Anorexics will not seek treatment on their own, so a parent or caring loved one should take the patient to receive treatment.
Anorexia is diagnosed by looking for the symptoms of starvation or malnutrition.
Once the diagnosis has been made, the treatment will require the family and hospital to be patient as the patient will need to be very encouraging.
Hospital care is only required when life-threatening health problems or severe weight loss is discovered.
While in the hospital, severely malnutritioned patients will have to have decisions made for them by a caregiver.
Regardless as to whether or not the patient is in the hospital, they should be in a warm, pleasant environment while they are undergoing treatment.
During treatment, the patient should not go to school or work because they need to avoid any type of stress.
Depression and anxiety will be treated with antidepressant medications. Most commonly, Fluoxetine is used as it will help to prevent relapses while also adding some weight to the patient.
Unfortunately there are no proven medications available for anorexia.
The treatment should include professional counseling, which will create a new outlook on life for the patient.
The patient needs to learn how to make healthy life choices and have good eating habits.
A patient needs to learn how to maintain a healthy weight.
During the treatment the patient will need to be taught how to take control of both their mind and their body in a healthy way.
Treatment has to do with ensuring a person's physical health and restoring the patient to a healthy weight.
Even after treatment, someone should help the person to not think that they have to have a “perfect” body any longer.
After treatment, intensive psychotherapy, behavioral and family therapy will need to be continued.
A person who has a mild form of anorexia nervosa can either have a full recovery or improve significantly as long as they do not resist treatment.
