How to understand meningitis

Meningitis is a disease that affects the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis is a disease not easy to understand. Because a variety of bacteria or viruses can cause Meningitis it is difficult to predict. Studies have shown certain conditions that seem to be prevalent in Meningitis cases but none are conclusive. In other words, it is rather difficult to prevent. Probably the most fearful aspect of the disease is its high rate of occurrence in small children and infants because of their underdeveloped immune systems.

Meningitis attacks if the right conditions occur and thus it is helpful to understand Meningitis. Here are some general information facts useful for understanding Meningitis:

People who tend to be in crowds or large groups of people quite frequently seem to have a higher occurrence of the disease. This only makes sense because the risk of catching bacteria or viruses is much higher when in dense populations. A few years ago, several students at a British university campus contracted the disease, presumably because the initial victim managed to spread the disease unknowingly to his fellow students.

The symptoms of the onset of Meningitis are fever, vomiting, light sensitivity, headache, and neck pain and stiffness. In order for one to distinguish between Meningitis and the flu, neck pain and stiffness is the symptom to be alert of because this is typical in Meningitis cases.

There are many different viral and bacterial organisms that cause Meningitis and most of us have actually been sick from them. Where they get dangerous is when they penetrate the membrane around the brain and spinal cord. This is where the condition becomes Meningitis and this is what not everyone understands. There is a shot to prevent Meningitis but it is expensive and it only protects against one kind of bacteria and not multiple types.

It is helpful to understand that Meningitis is actually a rare disease. Why some people become victim to it is still undetermined. It is also important to understand that if the viral strain of Meningitis occurs then it cannot be treated with antibiotics as can the bacterial strain of it.
