How to understand social anxiety disorder

Social anxiety disorder is also called social phobia. This means that a person suffering from this disorder is afraid of interacting with people. May it be through verbal conversations or is afraid of getting rejected. In any case this disorder can be very destructive because it upsets a person’s daily activities such as going to work or school.

There are a lot of people who isn’t aware of the severity of this disorder. Most of those who suffer tend to avoid social gatherings and lock themselves in their homes.

In order for us to be of help to our friends and family suffering from this disorder, we have to understand their situation and the way they feel about it.

Step 1: Have an open mind - Be sure to take this illness seriously. Most people tend to disregard the implications of social anxiety. Always treat it as a serious disease where the patient needs your utmost help.

Step 2: Observe their actions - Usually people with social anxiety disorder have problems interacting with people around them; the cause of this is their fear of embarrassment. Some times negative beliefs also come to play in this type of situations. Just stay with them in case something happens. Don’t ever loose sight of them, they might feel more neglected.

Step 3: Panic Attacks - This is the worst part of having social anxiety disorder, when the illness is triggered the person usually suffers from racing heartbeats, difficulty breathing and thoughts of inevitable death. This is called a panic attack.

Step 5: Understanding their issues - There is always an underlying cause why a person suffers from this kind of disease. Mostly it is caused by a traumatic event that happened in their life.

Step 6: Provide assistance - First thing that sufferers need to do is seek professional help. You can help them by persuading and accompanying them to a doctor. They might be hesitant at first, but with a little encouragement they’ll surely seek help. Especially if they know that you are there to help them.

Step 7: Effects of social phobia to children - Teenagers and adults aren’t the only ones prone to social phobia, even kids. They express their social anxiety thru crying and throwing tantrums.

Step 8: Help them cope - Coping means taking care of the patient. Make sure the prescribed drugs are taken correctly. Don’t forget that they are very sensitive so have a little patience.

Step 9: Encourage them to join a support group – Try to boost their morale by convincing them to join a support group. This exercise will also open doors for making them more sociable.

These are just a few simple steps that will help you understand the nature, symptoms and treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder.
