How to get to know the Alaskan Malamute
Alaskan Malamute is a breed of domestic dogs with heavy bones, broad head, bulky muzzle, wide ears, and plume-like furry tail. Malamutes come from the Arctic region where they served as sled dog to pull heavy freight.
Height and Weight
Males Alaska Malamutes weight on average usually 85 pounds while females weight range between 70 to 80 pounds. Malamutes have not an average size so there are small and larger dogs alike.
Colors and Coat
They are gray with trim of black and white with combined patterns on their faces resembling a mask. Their coat is dense and often white combined with red, silver, sable, and very rarely all white and all of them have brown eyes.
Temperament and Living Environment
These dogs have a strong temperament, are obstinate, dominant and manipulative that do not like to share their environment with other dogs of the same sex. They like however adventures and like to chase cats and other small animal awaking their hunting instincts.
Training
The temperament of this dog can be modeled with training and constancy to make it understand who is the boss in the relationship between pet and owner, especially if you keep the dog indoors. Otherwise, a Malamute requires early training and high fences to avoid him runaway.
Grooming
The advantage keeping your dog inside your house is that Alaska Malamutes are odorless and clean dogs so they do not need daily grooming, except daily brushing or at least twice a week.
Diet and Exercise
Alaskan Malamutes need a diet rich in nutrient sources and moderate exercising if you keep them inside your house.
Health issues and Life expectancy
These dogs use to be healthy if they are not overweighed, living for about 10 or 12 years.
